In America, medicine is slowly moving from treatment to preventative solutions. This means diagnosing problems before they occur instead of waiting to solve them afterwards. Part of this initiative is growing awareness of tests such as an electrolyte test. The labs done in an electrolyte panel and other tests help Americans to understand what is going on in their bodies. Sometimes the balances of these electrolytes can show something is happening. Catching any problem in its earliest stages makes treatment, where possible, easier. KwikMed now offer these tests in most states across the country. You can get Electrolytes Lab Test information as well as how to test your Electrolytes in Lab facilities in your area here at KwikMed.

What Does Electrolytes Panel Measure

The test to know about electrolyte balances, looks at a number of substances and elements in the body. Electrolytes are bases, salts and acids that are either positively or negatively charged. Their chemical symbols are denoted with plusses or minuses respectively to show this. Common ones include sodium, chloride, carbon dioxide and potassium. They perform a number of duties and are vital to all life forms. These include data transfers in the nervous system, between cells and especially in muscle function. An imbalance in these electrolytes is often seen as a problem with the kidneys as their balance is determined by the amount of fluid in the body as well as with other bodily functions.

What Are The Electrolyte Panel

Physicians know the rough ranges of a healthy body in terms of electrolyte balance. The normal amount of electrolytes in your body is determined by health, nature and fluid retention or loss. These can be tested via urine and blood. The normal levels of electrolytes in the blood for chloride are 96 to 106 mEq/L, for sodium it is 135 to 145 mEq/L and for potassium it is 3.7 to 5.2 mEq/L. Symptoms of an imbalance include confusion, lethargy and weakness. These should prompt a test, but if left untreated can lead to bigger problems such as comas and seizures. In addition, the underlying cause will remain untreated and these causes can include kidney failure and heart disease. The electrolytes panel is the first step to understanding the problem.

How is the Test for Electrolytes Done?

The test is done using the simplest available process. It is not legal for KwikMed to offer a home electrolyte test as it involves blood samples rather than a urine analysis test. In addition, the test cannot be bought in all states, so make sure it is ok to do so in yours. Once it is ok, KwikMed ask for patients to register an account if they do not already have one. They will have to complete a short consultation designed to ensure it is safe for them to take the test, then they will pay for the product. Within 24 hours an email containing a requisition form will arrive. This is to be printed and taken to the local lab. It is here the blood sample will be taken and analysed as requested in the form. KwikMed will post the results to your panel profile in around three to five days.

What Does an Electrolyte Test Show

The test shows how the body’s electrolytes are balanced. It could indicate mild to serious highs and lows in particular substances. These can be used as part of a diagnosis program alongside other symptoms. On their own, they may suggest fluid retention or loss, but when combined, can be used to find out the underlying cause. An example is the fluid and electrolyte imbalance in cushing syndrome. It is important not to self-diagnose yourself based on one set of results or even if you have them taken regularly. If you believe there to be a problem, speak with a physician for advice. Find an Electrolyte Lab in your area today.
